A Craft I’ve Loved for Years
I’ve been using punches for many years, and they never fail to inspire me. They come in so many shapes and sizes: flowers, butterflies, tags, and borders, offering endless creative possibilities.
In earlier years, I would cut out colourful shapes for children to use in their projects. It was almost like making our own little stickers! Over time, my punch collection has grown, and I’ve tried many styles and brands. Today, I want to share my favourites, the ones I reach for the most.
Flowers and butterflies are my go-to shapes. With just a little folding and layering, they become charming 3D embellishments, instantly adding depth and dimension. Tag punches are another favourite, they make creating gift tags or labels a breeze. And of course, edge punches are perfect for giving paper projects that final decorative touch.
Punches are also perfect for birthday party decorations: from cake toppers to tiny details that make any celebration feel extra special.
Creating Your Own Watercolor Paper
For this post, I decided to add a soft, dreamy base to my invitations using watercolors. You can use traditional paints or watercolour pens. I chose pens as they are easy and perfect for making colourful backgrounds that are ideal for punching out shapes.
All you need is a sheet of good-quality watercolour paper, a brush, a little water, and your favourite pastel shades. With just these simple supplies, you can create delicate, handmade papers that add a personal touch to your cards, no drawing skills required.
Bringing the Cards to Life
For my invitations, I used a pack of small, plain white cards and envelopes, keeping the design classic and clean. I also added a few glittery stones for sparkle, and if you like, transparent paper can be punched out too, giving your shapes extra charm and dimension.
Once your watercolor paper is dry, it’s time to start punching out your shapes. For 3D flowers or butterflies, I like to glue two identical shapes together in the center and gently bend the top layer. Adding a tiny glitter stone on top makes them truly stand out.
Fun Extras
Punches aren’t just for cards. I love using them to decorate wooden clothespins, tags, or even party favors. Tag punches, in particular, are perfect for personalising your invitations or adding decorative accents anywhere you like.
