How to Create a Beautiful Flower Arrangement Using Wire Mesh

Once again, I’d like to share another flower frog alternative that you can use if you don’t have a traditional Japanese kenzan or a vase with a built-in flower frog. This DIY method may even be a better option because it’s incredibly flexible and can be shaped to fit pots and containers of almost any size.

For this arrangement, I picked a selection of flowers and greenery from my garden and combined them with some store-bought lisianthus for a soft, elegant look.

Start by cutting a piece of galvanised wire mesh. Be sure to wear protective gloves while cutting and shaping the wire mesh, as the edges can be very sharp.

Fold all four corners toward the centre, then gently shape the mesh into a rounded form that fits inside your pot. The mesh should fit snugly so it stays firmly in place and doesn’t move around. A tight fit will hold the flower stems securely and make arranging much easier.

Once the wire mesh is in place, begin inserting your flowers and greenery through the openings. The wire mesh acts as a reusable flower frog, keeping each stem exactly where you want it.

Before you start, it’s helpful to think about the overall shape of your arrangement. There are many styles you can create. For example, you can make a pyramid-shaped arrangement, like the one shown here, with the tallest flowers in the center and gradually shorter stems around the edges.

Another classic approach is to use three different stem heights: one tall focal point, a medium height, and a lower layer. As a general guideline, the tallest flowers should be about twice the height of the pot to create balanced proportions.

When you’re happy with your design, don’t forget to add fresh water to the pot. Your flowers will stay hydrated while the wire mesh continues to support the stems.

This is a simple, sustainable, and reusable way to create beautiful flower arrangements in almost any pot or container. Unlike floral foam, the wire mesh can be used again and again, making it an eco-friendly flower frog alternative that’s perfect for gardeners and flower lovers alike.
