Some time ago, we spent a wonderful vacation in a coastal town in Australia. It was such a vibrant place, full of sunshine, beach energy, and that great summer feeling.

While exploring, we stumbled upon a small stand filled with handmade hair braids. There were hundreds, maybe even thousands, of them. Each one was unique, with different colors, patterns, and little details. I remember standing there thinking, how amazing is this!

When we returned home, I decided to try making these braids myself. After a bit of experimenting, I figured out a simple way to do it and now they’ve become one of my favourite party crafts. Older kids can easily make them on their own, and for younger children they make a lovely little accessory to add to their hair during a party.

In this post, I’ll show you step by step how to make your own hair braid at home and how to attach it to your child’s hair. You only need a few simple supplies.

Step 1: Prepare the Yarn

First, decide how long you would like your braid to be. For one braid, cut three equal pieces of yarn, each about 90–100 cm long. This method makes a braid approximately 30 cm long.

Fold the three pieces in half, so you now have six strands.

Use a wooden clip, clothespin or a small rubber hair gum (anything you have at hand) to hold the folded yarn in place a few centimetres below the fold.

Step 2: Create the Loop

Start braiding the strands using a simple three-strand braid for about 4–5 cm. This short section will form the loop at the top.

Once you reach the desired length, tie a knot to secure it. The loop will later help you attach the braid to the hair.

Step 3: Braid the Strands

You will now have six strands hanging down. Divide them into three pairs (two strands together in each section). Using these three paired sections, braid them together to create your main braid.

Continue until you reach the length you like.

Step 4: Add Beads and Decorations

Cut the ends neatly. If it helps, you can slightly dampen the yarn tips with a little water so they slide more easily through the beads.

Thread on beads with larger holes, and if you like, add a small charm or pendant at the end for a playful finishing touch. Secure everything with a final knot.

Step 5: Attach the Braid to the Hair

Now comes the fun part: adding the braid to the hair. It might look a little complicated at first, but once you try it, you’ll see how quick and easy it actually is.

All you need is a crochet hook and a longer piece of yarn.

Start by choosing a small section of hair where you’d like the braid to sit. Take the finished braid and, using the crochet hook, gently pull a small section of hair through the loop at the top of the braid. This will anchor the braid in place.

Next, take that small section of hair together with a little more hair from the same area and begin making a regular braid (plait). As you braid, simply include the extra piece of yarn along with the hair strands. This helps secure everything nicely and keeps the braid in place.

Once your braid is finished, tie it off with the yarn, making a few small knots at the end to hold everything together. And that’s it, you’re done! ✨

The best part is that these braids are easy to remove and just as easy to attach again, so they can be reused whenever you like.
